Three of Tonga’s noble ministers have resigned following the unexpected resignation of Prime Minister Sovaleni on Monday.
Acting Prime Minister Samiu Vaipulu, speaking at a press conference in Nuku’alofa today, confirmed that Lord Fohe, Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forests; Lord Vaea, Minister for Internal Affairs; and Lord Tu’i’afitu, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, have stepped down.
These resignations add to the political uncertainty as five ministerial positions now stand vacant. The vacancies also include the portfolios of Defence and Foreign Affairs, following earlier resignations by Sovaleni and Fekitamoeloa ‘Utoikamanu in April.
No official reasons were provided for the latest resignations. Vaipulu said that discussions are ongoing to assign caretakers to the empty positions. He clarified that all ministers would remain in their roles until December 24, when a new prime minister is to be selected.
Both Vaipulu and Sovaleni ruled out running for the premiership. Sovaleni said he would retain his roles as Minister of Education and Police for the interim, while Vaipulu would oversee Defence and Foreign Affairs.
Tonga’s leadership transition has implications for its Pacific Islands Forum chairmanship, with discussions underway about its continuity.
