Tonga’s Meteorological Service has deactivated the Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Centre as Tropical Cyclone Pita moves southeast, away from the kingdom.
At noon today, Cyclone Pita, a Category 1 system, was located 650 kilometers southwest of Nuku’alofa and 485 kilometers west-southwest of ‘Ata Island. The cyclone is now tracking southeast at 11 knots and no longer poses a threat to Tonga.

“The associated gale force winds have completely moved out from the open waters of Niuatoputapu, Vava’u, and Ha’apai,” the Meteorological Service said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, a tropical cyclone warning remained in place for the Niuas, Vava’u, and Ha’apai. However, by 9 a.m., the strong wind warning for these areas had been lifted as conditions improved.
Forecasts for Tonga predict generally fine weather with occasional cloudy periods and light showers across the islands. Temperatures in Nuku’alofa are expected to reach 30°C today, with a low of 21°C overnight.
This marks the first cyclone alert of the 2024-2025 season to be deactivated.
