ABF has supplied outboard engines, comms and safety gear for Tonga Customs’ Vavaʻu cutter.
Australian Border Force (ABF) recently handed over new outboard engines, maritime safety and communications equipment to enhance Tonga Customs’ maritime vessel C.V. PALETU’A, to the Ministry of Revenue & Customs Tonga Deputy CEO – Borders, Mr Sau Niulala.
The upgrades will enhance customs patrols in Vavaʻu waters, extending reach and response capability. Deputy CEO Niulala said the vessel “will play an important role in border security in the future,” reflecting both nations’ commitment to tackling illicit drugs and cross‑border threats.
This move follows earlier cooperation under the Australia–Tonga border security partnership, including training and equipment support for Tonga Customs in Nuku‘alofa. The ABF has previously provided workshops on supply‑chain protection, x‑ray scanning and narcotics detection to local officers.
The Vavaʻu upgrade is part of Australia’s broader Pacific assistance strategy, reinforcing maritime security and drug interdiction. Together, both nations continue working side by side in response to shared border challenges.
In December 2024, ABF delivered training sessions in Nuku‘alofa involving customs, quarantine and aviation officers. The current donation focuses on enhancing operational assets in Vavaʻu.
