Tonga wrapped up their OFC U-16 Men’s Championship 2025 – Qualifying campaign with a commanding 5-1 victory over American Samoa in Nuku’alofa. The hosts delivered a scintillating performance in front of a home crowd, showcasing their offensive prowess and defensive discipline.
The match started with a blistering pace as Benton Setefano put Tonga ahead within three minutes, capitalising on a swift attacking move. Sioeli Veatupu nearly doubled the lead midway through the first half but was denied by a fine save from American Samoa’s Taalo Lauofo.
Despite their early dominance, Tonga conceded in the 33rd minute when Pati Faleagafulu broke through and netted the equaliser for American Samoa. However, the second half belonged to Tonga, with substitute Fonua Moala restoring the lead in the 63rd minute after a skilful build-up.
Sitaleki Kautai’s brace, including a stoppage-time strike, and a well-placed shot from Siaki Lonitenisi sealed the emphatic win. American Samoa’s woes were compounded when captain Tau Lealuga was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.
The win serves as a statement performance for Tonga, who conclude their qualifying campaign on a high note.
Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea concluded their qualifying campaign for the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship 2025 on match day three in Nuku’alofa with a 0-0 draw.
Papua New Guinea will join Group A, alongside Cook Islands, Fiji and Tahiti, as they look ahead to the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship to be held in the Solomon Islands this August.
