Tonga has been hit by heavy rain and strong winds over the past 24 hours, with the Tonga Meteorological Services reporting widespread impacts across the island nation.
According to the latest Automatic Weather Station (AWS) data, Lapaha in Tongatapu recorded the highest rainfall at 118mm, while Koloa in Vava’u received 142.8mm of rain. Meanwhile, damaging gale force winds were also observed, with the strongest gusts recorded at MORDI station in Tongatapu, reaching 39.5 knots at 5:00 am.
‘Eua also experienced significant weather, with Kauafana recording 107mm of rainfall and wind gusts of up to 39 knots at 3:10 am. In Ha’apai, Nomuka faced the most intense winds, with gusts reaching 42 knots at 11:20 pm.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, as the risk of localised flooding and wind damage remains high in vulnerable areas. The Tonga Meteorological Services continues to monitor the situation closely and advises the public to stay informed through regular updates and alerts.
Authorities are reminding residents to secure loose objects, avoid flooded areas, and take necessary precautions as the adverse weather conditions persist.
