The Tonga Energy Commission is reviewing its five-year contract with Tonga Power Limited to prioritize cleaner energy, affordable tariffs, and reliable electricity for the next five years.
Siamelie Latu, CEO of the Tonga Energy Commission, told Tonga Broadcasting, “One of the key reviews for the next contract includes penalties for Tonga Power Limited when blackouts cause damage to customer property.”
Latu emphasized that the “most important part of the review is to ensure affordable tariffs for customers,” reflecting the commission’s commitment to consumer welfare.
The review also aims to involve the public, with plans to host a forum where citizens can provide input on the new contract terms.
The current agreement, which began in 2020, is set to expire in June 2025.
The updated contract is expected to align with Tonga’s push for sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions.
