The United States has welcomed the Government of Tonga’s endorsement and participation in the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), marking a significant step in counterproliferation efforts. Tonga becomes the 115th state to endorse the PSI and the ninth to do so in 2024.
Tonga’s endorsement follows its involvement in the PSI Exercise Pacific Protector, hosted by Australia in Sydney from September 24-27, 2024. The PSI aims to stop the flow of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), delivery systems, and related materials to and from states and non-state actors of concern.

Launched in Krakow, Poland, in 2003, the PSI celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023. Endorsing states, like Tonga, make voluntary political commitments to enhance international security by adopting streamlined procedures for rapid information exchange and strengthening national and international laws. The U.S. will work closely with Tonga to achieve these goals.
