Everbridge, Inc., a global leader in critical event management (CEM) and public warning solutions, has been selected by Tonga to strengthen its early warning system, according to a statement by the company. As part of the United Nations’ Early Warnings for All initiative, the Everbridge Public Warning platform will support the Tonga Mobile Applications Community MHEW and Response System (MACRES).
Tonga, vulnerable to climate-induced extreme weather, aims to improve its disaster preparedness with the Everbridge system, which is expected to be tested in early 2025. “With the Everbridge Cell Broadcast platform, we are confident in our ability to provide rapid and targeted warnings to our communities,” said Laitia Fifita, Acting Director of Tonga Meteorological Service.
Funded by the World Bank through the Pacific Resilience Project, this initiative marks the first involving a Small Island Developing State under the UN banner. The Everbridge technology will enhance Tonga’s ability to disseminate warnings via smartphones without needing internet data, ensuring broad coverage during disasters.
David Wagner, Everbridge CEO, stated, “We are proud to partner with Tonga to bolster their early warning capabilities and enhance public safety.”
This development comes after the 2022 volcanic eruption and tsunami, highlighting the need for robust early warning systems in Tonga.
