The Prime Minister of Tonga, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku, has emphasized the importance of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an inclusive way.
Hu’akavameiliku was speaking at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (SDG Summit) in New York on 18 September 2023.
“Science, technology, and innovation offer cost-effective ways and inclusivity to development projects,” he said. “However, we must use them with caution to ensure that they are risk-informed and mitigate potential detrimental effects on our environment and people’s well-being, leaving no one behind.”
Tonga is highly vulnerable to climate change, natural disasters, and other global challenges. Hu’akavameiliku said that the government is committed to leveraging STI to speed up progress in achieving the SDGs in a balanced way.
“Tonga has already witnessed the transformative power of STI in action,” he said. “For example, we are using solar and wind energy to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and improve energy security, and digital technologies to improve resilience and access to education, healthcare, and community connectivity.”
Tonga is also leveraging satellite data to monitor and manage marine resources, address illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, develop early warning systems for natural disasters, and use digital technologies to enhance financial inclusion and reduce inequality and poverty.
“Tonga actively supports the development of innovative businesses and industries, fostering entrepreneurship and creating job opportunities,” Hu’akavameiliku said.
In conclusion, Hu’akavameiliku urged all member states to join Tonga in committing to harnessing the power of STI to achieve the SDGs and build a better future for all.
“We must use satellite data for marine resource management and IUU fishing, develop early warning systems for natural disasters, improve access to financial services through digital technologies, and support the growth of innovative businesses and industries,” he said. “We must also be mindful of disinformation and cybersecurity issues. Only together will we be able to achieve the SDGs and build a better future for all.”
