Tonga’s Police Commissioner Shane McLennan met with Chinese Ambassador Liu Weimin and representatives of the Chinese community in Tonga on Wednesday to discuss measures for enhancing public safety.
The tripartite dialogue, held on October 30, aimed to improve security coordination and ensure the protection of Chinese nationals and businesses in the country, according to a statement from the People’s Republic of China Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ambassador Liu commended the dialogue as essential for sharing information and enhancing safety. He emphasized China’s commitment to supporting law enforcement cooperation with Tongan authorities to foster a stable environment for the local Chinese community.
“This partnership is vital for ensuring the safety and rights of Chinese citizens in Tonga,” he said.

Mr. Fang Xiaolong, President of the Tonga Chinese Association, expressed appreciation for the dialogue and highlighted the importance of regular meetings with police to address safety concerns.
Commissioner McLennan provided an overview of Tonga’s current public security situation, addressing questions from those attending the event.
He affirmed that the police are committed to improving service and response strategies, particularly for the Chinese community, through strengthened communication and proactive safety measures.
