Tonga Police, in collaboration with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) through the Tonga-Australia Policing Partnership (TAPP) and Cyber Safety Pasifika, has successfully concluded a 9-day training program focused on combating cyber abuse and reinforcing digital security across the Kingdom. The initiative is a commitment to enhancing online safety and protecting the Tongan community from cyber threats.
The program, attended by 12 officers from Tonga Police, featured comprehensive training led by CSP Sergeant Nigel Wood and New Zealand Police member Enoka Feterika. The facilitators from Cyber Safety Pasifika guided the participants through 10 modules covering a wide range of topics, including foundational knowledge, practical skills, legal considerations, cyber intelligence, and emerging trends in cybersecurity.
Commissioner of Police, Shane McLennan, attended the graduation ceremony alongside Tonga Police District Commanders, Commissioned Officers, and the participants. Commissioner McLennan acknowledged the contributions of Cyber Safety Pasifika and the support from the Tonga-Australia Policing Partnership, “This training marks a significant step towards creating a safer cyber environment for our communities.”
The Tonga Police cybercrime unit has been equipped with a newly furnished office and an analysis lab, further enhancing their capabilities to tackle online threats. With these advancements, Tonga Police aims to empower local communities with the skills and knowledge necessary to address cyber challenges effectively.
