Tonga Police are investigating the first reported single-vehicle accident of 2025, which occurred at Niutao Beach, Talafo’ou, on New Year’s Day.
A car swerved off the road and struck an electric pole near the beach entrance. The driver, a 20-year-old male, and a female passenger were unharmed.
However, a 1-year-old child held by the passenger sustained minor injuries.
Police suspect speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol as contributing factors. Investigations are ongoing.
Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially on sharp curves and challenging road terrains.
“Slow down, secure young passengers in car seats, and adhere to speed limits to avoid accidents,” police advised in a statement.
No further updates on the child’s condition or additional findings were available at the time of reporting.
