Tonga Police have identified intoxication and failure to wear a seatbelt as key factors in a fatal crash on Vaha’akolo Road, Vaololoa, on Sunday, 26 January.
The incident claimed the life of 30-year-old Dr. William Lavemai, who was driving a blue sedan southward when he reportedly swerved and collided with a northbound vehicle. Lavemai was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and police suspect heavy intoxication contributed to the tragedy.
Passengers and the driver of the second vehicle, who were all wearing seatbelts, sustained minor injuries and have received medical treatment.
In a statement, Tonga Police reiterated the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of seatbelt use: “This simple yet life-saving measure reduces the risk of serious injuries or fatalities. We advise the public to always adhere to road safety rules, avoid driving under the influence, and buckle up every time you are on the road. Seatbelts save lives!”
The police are continuing their investigation and have called for community support in promoting safer driving practices.
