Tonga Police have launched an investigation into a viral video circulating widely on social media, particularly Facebook, which has raised public safety concerns.
In a statement released Monday, authorities said they are working to verify the video’s authenticity, origin, and context. “Public safety and the mitigation of any possible risks are our top priorities,” the statement said.
The video is allegedly connected to the death of a man in the village of Nakolo last month, though police have not confirmed the details or disclosed the video’s content. Speculation about its significance has sparked widespread public concern.
Tonga Police emphasized the legal implications of sharing harmful electronic communications, reminding citizens that such actions constitute an offence under national laws. “We are committed to confirming all the information Tonga Police receives before acting upon it,” the statement continued.
Authorities are urging individuals with any relevant information to come forward and assist with the investigation. They have also cautioned the public against spreading unverified content, which could amplify fear and misinformation.
