Tonga Power Limited (TPL) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have initiated a joint project aimed at improving grid operations on Tongatapu Island.
The project, titled Improving Grid Operation under the Centralized Control Centre, is designed to improve Tonga’s renewable energy infrastructure and promote sustainability, according to a statement from TPL.
This collaboration will address challenges in Tonga’s energy management system (EMS) and micro-grid systems (MGS), ensuring efficient integration of renewable sources like wind and solar power . The project includes critical upgrades to monitoring and control systems, which are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy security.

“This collaboration with JICA is a critical step forward in ensuring that Tonga’s energy infrastructure can support its ambitious renewable energy targets. We are excited to strengthen our grid operations and make substantial progress towards a sustainable future,” said Finau Moa, CEO of TPL.
A key focus is the restoration and maintenance of Tonga’s optical fiber lines, essential for grid operations, especially after cyclone damage. On-site training will be provided to strengthen local capacity in managing these systems.
Rika Uemura, JICA’s Resident Representative, emphasized JICA’s commitment: “We are proud to partner with TPL in this project, which demonstrates the strength of our commitment to improving energy security and resilience in the Pacific region.”
The project is set to run from October 2024 to September 2026.
