Tonga’s passport has been ranked among the best in the Pacific region, securing equal 39th place on the Henley Passport Index.
The index, which evaluates global travel freedom, highlights that Tongan passport holders can access 131 destinations without requiring a visa, tying with Samoa. The Solomon Islands leads the Pacific, ranked 37th with visa-free access to 134 destinations.
The Henley Passport Index, based on data from the International Air Transport Association, assesses 199 passports and 227 travel destinations. The rankings are determined by the number of countries a passport holder can visit visa-free or with simplified entry requirements like visas on arrival or electronic travel authorizations.
Other Pacific nations include the Marshall Islands with 129 destinations and Tuvalu with 128, while Kiribati, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau allow visa-free access to 124 countries. Vanuatu, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea rank lower, with access to 92, 90, and 87 destinations, respectively.
Globally, Singapore tops the list, allowing access to 195 destinations. At the bottom is Afghanistan, with only 26 destinations offering visa-free entry.
