A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck south of Tonga’s main islands, with no tsunami warning issued.
The quake occurred around 200 km south of Tongatapu and ʻEua just close to midnight at a depth of 70 km. Pesa Kuila from the Tonga Meteorological Centre confirmed there is no tsunami threat for Tongatapu and ʻEua. No damage has been reported.
Tonga lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiencing frequent seismic activity. In 2025 alone, Tongatapu has recorded 15 earthquakes above magnitude 4, including a 6.4 magnitude quake on May 14.
The recent quake goes to show Tonga’s vulnerability to natural disasters. The World Climate Risk Index 2021 ranked Tonga as the third most disaster-prone country globally.
