Sini Latu, Deputy Secretary General of the Tonga Red Cross Society, has traveled to Port Vila, Vanuatu, to assist in recovery efforts following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake last month.
Sione Taumoefolau, Secretary General of the Tonga Red Cross Society, told Tonga Broadcasting that Latu is “providing help particularly with facilitating financial aid to those affected.”
Taumoefolau said that Latu was chosen for this mission due to his “experience and specialized training fit to ensure rapid delivery of financial aid through the Vanuatu government’s relief operations.”
The earthquake resulted in at least 16 fatalities and injured over 200 people.
The Vanuatu Red Cross Society is actively distributing aid to affected communities.
The situation remains critical, with ongoing aftershocks and heavy rains increasing the risk of landslides and further building collapses.
Latu’s deployment highlights the collaborative efforts among Pacific nations in disaster response and recovery.
