Tonga’s head coach Tevita Tuifua says experienced Europe-based players may return for the 2025 test season as part of preparations for the 2027 Rugby World Cup qualifiers.
“We wanted to make sure we have our own pool of local players and those in New Zealand and Australia,” Tuifua told RNZ Pacific. “That is important for our growth moving forward.”
Tuifua emphasized upskilling local talent in 2024, though this meant leaving seasoned overseas players out. “We have seen very good talent, and if they are mixed with experienced players, they will lift.”
The Tonga Rugby Union is also partnering with Japan on its TRU Academy, aiming to strengthen its under-20s program.
Tuifua is focused on the 2025 Pacific Nations Cup, doubling as a World Cup qualifier. “More games, including Tier One match-ups, would be great,” he said.
Coaching contracts extend to the 2027 World Cup.
