The Tonga Rugby Union (TRU) has received a donation of rugby equipment from the Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU), further strengthening ties between the two nations.
The handover ceremony took place last week at the Embassy of Japan in Tonga. INAGAKI Hisao, Ambassador of Japan to Tonga, handed over the donation which included 150 rugby balls, 140 markers, four tackle bags, and additional gear to support Tonga’s rugby development.
TRU CEO ‘Aisea Aholelei expressed deep appreciation for the contribution, highlighting its impact on grassroots rugby. “We are profoundly grateful to the Japan Rugby Football Union and the people of Japan for this generous donation,” Aholelei said.
The initiative is part of Japan’s wider efforts to support rugby in the Pacific, reinforcing the strong sporting and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
‘Aholelei also acknowledged Japan’s broader commitment to Tongan rugby, referencing the construction of a new training facility, which was formalized last month under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Cultural Project.
“We hope Japan continues to play a key role in Tonga’s rugby development in order to nurture future rugby players who bridge Japan and Tonga,” Aholelei added.
