Tonga continued its strong campaign at the World Youth Cup Qualifier Oceania by defeating the Cook Islands 66-44 at the National Sports Arena in Nikao, Cook Islands, on Wednesday. The victory puts Tonga in a dominant position, keeping their hopes alive for a spot in the Netball World Youth Cup 2025, set to be held in Gibraltar.
The match saw both teams vying for control, but Tonga quickly took command. Despite Cook Islands’ shooter holding her space well, Tonga’s accuracy and solid defense proved too strong. Beyoncé Palavi led Tonga’s attack, creating crucial opportunities that helped maintain their lead.
The Cook Islands mounted a brief fightback in the second quarter, with Nicol Tiaore stepping up as wing defense, but Tonga’s zone defense continued to block the Cook Islands’ efforts. By halftime, Tonga led 34-25.
In the third quarter, Tonga’s tight defense and timely intercepts extended their lead, frustrating Cook Islands’ attack. By the final quarter, Tonga had solidified their dominance, ending the game with a comfortable 66-44 win.
Tonga won against Fiji 64-40 but lost to Samoa 45-51. Tonga will face Papua New Guinea tomorrow.
