Tonga signed a grant agreement for the Grid Enhancement for Sustainable Energy Transition (GREST) Project, a significant step towards achieving its renewable energy goals.
Represented by the Minister for Finance, Hon. Tiofilusi Tiueti, the agreement is part of a partnership with the Asian Development Bank, the European Union, Germany, and the Government of Australia.
The total funding includes US$1 million from the Asian Development Fund, US$1.5 million from the Clean Energy Fund, and US$2.1 million from the European Union.
The GREST Project will strengthen Tonga’s electricity grids, increase access to clean and affordable energy, and support the country’s commitment to 70% renewable energy by 2025 and 100% by 2035, as outlined in the Tonga Energy Roadmap (TERM+).
The project will focus on upgrading Tonga’s electricity network and building resilience against climate impacts, contributing to reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
