Tonga finished third at the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship, surpassing their 2023 performance despite an early setback with the withdrawal of Tyra Bagiante. Sophiana Moala stepped in and worked hard in attack for the Future Mataliki.
New Caledonia dominated the first half but couldn’t convert their chances. Kinë Hmaen, their attacking focal point, came close but was shut down by Tonga’s defense just before halftime.
In the second half, New Caledonia threatened with a free kick from Matha Bako and a disallowed goal by Hmaen. However, it was Tonga who broke the deadlock when Kuria Malohifo’ou scored after Cienna Filimoeatu’s free kick hit the crossbar.
Despite New Caledonia’s efforts to equalize, Tonga’s defense, led by Tema Tonga and Losaline Tu’utafaiva, held firm. Tonga secured the 1-0 win, taking the bronze in the tournament.
