Tonga’s U-16 men’s football team suffered a 5-2 defeat to Papua New Guinea in their opening match of the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship 2025 Qualifying tournament yesterday at Teufaiva Stadium in Nuku’alofa.
Papua New Guinea dominated the first half, netting five goals, including braces from Peter Yagum and Boas Tommy. Tonga responded with two late goals from Sitaleki Kautai and Sioeli Veatupu, providing some consolation for the home crowd.
The loss places Tonga at the bottom of the four-team qualifying group, which also includes American Samoa and Vanuatu. Only the group winner will advance to the main tournament in the Solomon Islands this August, where they will compete for one of three spots at the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.
Tonga’s next match is against Vanuatu on Tuesday, where they will aim to rebound and keep their qualification hopes alive. Coach Timote Moleni emphasized the importance of each game, stating, “This tournament is not just about winning; it’s about providing our young players with a platform to gain international experience, hone their skills, and foster their passion for the game.”
The OFC U-16 Men’s Championship Qualifying tournament runs from May 3 to May 9, 2025.
