Tonga’s U15 women’s basketball team is set for its historic first appearance at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) U15 Oceania Championship, held in Canberra, Australia, from November 11-16.
The team faces New Caledonia in its opening match tonight, followed by games against Fiji and the Cook Islands in Group B.
The tournament, featuring eight countries including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Samoa, offers a direct path to the FIBA U16 Women’s Asia Cup, a key step toward the FIBA U17 Women’s World Championship.

Tonga’s Head Coach Joseph Vega highlighted the team’s rigorous preparations. “We’ve been constantly communicating with the players through Zoom and online training courses, focusing on strength and conditioning,” said Vega. “Despite the obstacles, the girls are fired up to give their best.”
Key player Kyra Tu’ihalangingie-Midson emphasized the team’s defensive focus. “Defense is one of my strengths. I love it because it pushes me to work harder,” she said. “I’m also excited to showcase my playmaking skills and, most importantly, to listen to my teammates and play for them.”
For Tonga, this tournament is a milestone moment, as Vega said, “This is a lifetime achievement for these young athletes…we want to make our people proud.”
