Petty Officer Maria Pahulu, a proud member of the New Zealand Navy, delivered a powerful message during the South Pacific Defence Ministers Meeting (SPDMM) in Auckland: “To sail the seas, we need to understand our stars.” The meeting, now in its 9th iteration, brings together Defence Ministers and Chiefs from countries including Tonga, New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji.
Tonga’s Defence Minister, Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala, was welcomed with traditional hymns and gifted a symbolic toki by Tongan members of the New Zealand Navy. Pahulu explained the carvings represented waves, symbolizing their connection to Tonga.

Pahulu, born and raised in Māngere East, has served in the Navy for nearly 20 years, emphasizing the importance of cultural heritage. “Our hearts will always beat Tonga,” she said, underlining the values of the Tongan culture, including respect, humility, and loyalty.
Pahulu highlighted the shared values between Māori and Pacific Islanders, especially in defence, and stressed the importance of New Zealand’s ongoing military support in the region. New Zealand recently co-funded a $6.5 million leadership centre in Tonga, reinforcing its commitment to Pacific defence cooperation.
