Sitaleki Filihiahekava, a 32-year-old Sydney rugby league player, was fatally stabbed outside a Guzman y Gomez fast food restaurant on Marrickville Rd in Sydney’s inner west on Monday evening.
The incident occurred at around 7:40 pm, shocking diners and bystanders. Despite first responders’ efforts to perform CPR, Filihiahekava died at the scene.
Police believe the attack was targeted, with Acting Superintendent Ben Kennis stating, “We believe the two people had met, and the attack was somewhat targeted … it was not random in nature.” The suspect fled the scene and was last seen running down Silver St. Authorities are still working to identify the assailant, and witnesses are urged to come forward.
Filihiahekava, a member of the Mascot Junior Rugby League club, is being remembered by teammates and friends. Club president Frank Cookson expressed sorrow on Facebook, saying, “Leki was a well-liked and respected member of our A Reserve grade premiership team … RIP Leki, your happy, friendly personality will be greatly missed.”
The crime scene was described as “highly emotive,” with family and friends gathering nearby. Police have asked anyone with information or footage to contact Marrickville Police Station or Crime Stoppers.
