Leading Marine Technician (Electrical) Joe Mataele has been named New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) Person of the Year and Sailor of the Year, a double accolade highlighting his dedication and leadership.
“These awards aren’t just for me,” Mataele said. “The entire unit is so high-performing that someone needs to get recognised. So they chose me, but there’s so many people who could have been chosen.”
A member of the NZDF for nearly a decade, Mataele attributes his success to his upbringing in Tonga and the support of his family and colleagues.
Mataele joined the NZDF after overcoming setbacks, including delays caused by security clearance and a broken leg. Now an instructor, he finds joy in mentoring new recruits.
“The key things I have learnt are self-discipline, resilience and self-awareness,” Mataele said. “For anybody thinking of joining—take a shot.”
His achievements exemplify perseverance and humility.
