Dr. Sunia Foliaki has been promoted to Professor at Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University, effective 1 January 2025.
He is among 12 staff members elevated to the rank of Professor in the latest promotion round, alongside 25 new Associate Professors.
Professor Foliaki, from the villages of Ha’afeva and Kanokupolu, is a public health physician with a focus on Pacific health research.
His work addresses critical health challenges in New Zealand and the Pacific, spanning cancer epidemiology, asthma, non-communicable diseases, and food security policies.
Dr. Foliaki is currently leading a mixed-methods study investigating factors affecting access to paediatric palliative care among Pacific populations in New Zealand.
He is also spearheading a New Zealand-funded initiative aimed at strengthening Tonga’s health workforce.

Professor Foliaki’s career is defined by his commitment to improving health outcomes for Pacific communities.
His consultancy work with Pacific Island Health Ministries and his research on evidence-based palliative care guidelines underline his impactful approach.
