A 17-year-old high school student from Niuatoputapu, Tonga, has captured international attention after a video of her singing went viral on social media. Mele Prescott, filmed performing at her school, has been praised for her “angelic” voice, with the video gaining widespread admiration on Facebook.
“I’ve always wanted to be a singer,” Mele told Nesia Daily. Following the video’s success, she has been invited to audition online for the prestigious Sydney-based Gondwana Choir. Talks of a potential meeting with Opera Australia are also underway, should her audition be successful.
Despite her passion for singing, Mele remains practical about her future. “If I can’t make it as a singer, I’ll try to be an accountant,” she said.
Niuatoputapu, known as the “sacred land,” is one of Tonga’s most remote islands, offering few employment opportunities beyond handicrafts made from pandanus leaves. School principal Paea Kuma expressed his hope that Mele’s talent would bring her new opportunities.
“If she dreams to be a well-known singer, she can be. Nothing is impossible,” Kuma said. “We believe that God is helping us.”
Mele’s newfound recognition could be a turning point for her, showcasing her talent beyond the small island community.
