The Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) Group has announced that Dr. Alamea Aholelei, a respected Tongan surgeon, will be a featured speaker at the Global Health Symposium during the PMA 2024 conference set to be held in New Zealand next month.
Dr. Aholelei, a General Surgeon at Vaiola Hospital, has dedicated 19 years to improving health outcomes in Tonga and advocating for better healthcare across the Pacific.
“The most fulfilling part of my practice is saving a life and witnessing the joy and peace it brings to patients, their families, and communities,” Dr. Aholelei shared. “I take pride in pushing the boundaries within the Pacific to raise our standards of care and advocating for those patients who may not have a voice or need help to amplify it.”
Excited about her role at the event, she said, “I am excited to learn from the high calibre of speakers, panellists, and colleagues from across the region, New Zealand, and Australia. I am particularly keen to understand how countries navigate and overcome the challenges of developing clinical capacity and leadership.”
Dr. Aholelei has also played a key role in coordinating visiting medical teams under the New Zealand Medical Treatment Scheme (NZMTS). At the upcoming symposium, she will present on “Growing Leadership – Strengthening Country Capacity.”
