A Chinese medical team has successfully conducted Tonga’s inaugural laparoscopic gynaecological surgery at Vaiola Hospital in Nukuʻalofa.
The patient, 31-year-old Salote, was diagnosed with a pelvic cystic mass during a free clinic run by the fifth Chinese medical team stationed in Tonga. As a woman who has not yet given birth, she was hesitant to undergo open surgery due to concerns about recovery and future fertility.
Dr Zhang Haifeng, a gynaecologist on the team, opted for a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure. During the operation, he discovered and removed an ovarian tumour in a one-hour surgery. “Although there is donated laparoscopic equipment in the surgical rooms here, local doctors are not trained in its use,” Dr Zhang noted. “Given the patient’s situation, laparoscopic surgery was the most appropriate treatment option.”
The procedure marks a significant advancement for Tonga’s healthcare system, which previously required patients to travel abroad for such surgeries. Health Minister Dr Ana ʻAkauʻola praised the achievement and expressed hope that the Chinese team would train local doctors in laparoscopic techniques to benefit more patients.
Since arriving in July 2024, the six-member Chinese medical team has treated over 3,000 patients and provided free clinics across Tonga. In February 2025, China donated over 100 boxes of medical supplies to the Ministry of Health, including equipment for gynaecology and other specialties.
This collaboration underscores China’s ongoing commitment to enhancing healthcare in the Pacific region.
