King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau‘u joined hundreds of Tongans today in the annual March for Jesus, commemorating the anniversary of King George Taufa’ahau Tupou I’s reign, the founder of modern Tonga.
Observed on December 4th, King Tupou I Day celebrates Tonga’s unification as a Christian kingdom under the Tu’i Kanokupolu dynasty in 1845.
Participants marched from Maamaloa Grounds along Taufa‘ahau Road to Pangai Lahi Grounds, where festivities took place.

During his address, King Tupou VI reflected on the legacy of King Tupou I, highlighting his dedication of Tonga to God.
“Tupou I did something unique by asking God to protect Tonga,” the King said, noting how this inspired the nation’s motto: “God and Tonga are our inheritance.”

Crown Prince Tupouto‘a ‘Ulukalala, members of the royal household, nobles, Prime Minister and government representatives, and church leaders also participated in the event, affirming Tonga’s enduring commitment to faith and unity.
