Tonga’s traditional attire, the taʻovala, took centre stage at the Osaka Expo 2025.
Celebrating Tonga National Day yesterday, the fashion show highlighted the taʻovala—a symbol of Tongan pride, identity, and belonging.

Worn at ceremonies, church, and important gatherings, each type of taʻovala tells a story.
The showcase featured Tongan rugby players and their families residing in Japan, Miss Tonga Racheal Guttenbeil, and performers from the Silapelu‘ua Dance Academy.
They presented various styles of taʻovala, from formal to everyday wear, honouring the diverse occasions these garments represent.

The Expo, running from April to October, is expected to attract over 28 million visitors.
