Tonga’s women’s rugby continues its rise, with six locally based players named in the 2025 Penina Pasifika squad, the highest representation yet.
Oceania Rugby announced the 30-player squad, which includes 13 Tongan players. Four of them previously played for Tonga’s national Lofa women’s team, proving the success of local talent development.
“The Tongan Women’s combine was a highlight in selecting this team,” said Head Coach Ramsey Tomokino. “It was a vast improvement on their 2024 version and a great platform for Tonga women’s rugby.”
Tonga Rugby Union CEO ‘Aisea ‘Aholelei emphasized the importance of the program in growing women’s rugby in Tonga. “Selecting six locally based players reflects progress in developing the women’s game and providing opportunities for athletes to compete at higher levels,” he said.
The Penina Pasifika team will embark on a four-to-five-week tour of Australia, playing against Super W teams. Their first match is scheduled against the Queensland Reds on March 1 at Ballymore Stadium.
With a mix of youth and experience, the Tongan players are expected to make a strong impact as the program continues to create pathways for Pacific women in elite rugby.
