Tonga’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup were dashed tonight, following a 30-16 defeat to Fetu Samoa in Suva. Despite a strong performance at HFC Bank Stadium, Tonga fell short against a determined Samoan side, ending their qualification campaign.
Samoa started strong, with early tries from Sienna Lofipo and Sarina Masaga, putting them ahead by 10 points within the first 10 minutes. However, Tonga mounted a spirited comeback, narrowing the gap to just four points in the second half after tries from Filomina Hanisi and Lavinia Tauhalaliku.
Key moments, such as a game-changing turnover by Lofipo, helped Samoa regain control. Tonga had the opportunity to equalize but lost momentum when Manilita Takapautolo fumbled a promising opportunity near the try line. Samoa capitalized on Tonga’s errors, with standout performances from Evania Pelite and Annetta-Claudia Nu’uausala, sealing the win with late tries from Jessica Patea and Lindsay Tui.
For Tonga, it was their fourth Test match since 2008, showcasing significant effort despite the loss. Samoa now awaits the winner of the Pacific Bowl match between Fiji and the Cook Islands to secure their place at RLWC2026.
