The Tongatapu 1 constituency has launched a project to install CCTV cameras in six schools to strengthen security and safety for students.
Initiated by the People’s Representative to Parliament for Tongatapu 1, Tevita Puloka, and the constituency office, the project seeks to safeguard the community.
“The project is to support patrol officers in protecting the community and ensure the safety of children,” said ‘Asipeli Funaki, Tongatapu 1 town officer, in an interview with Tonga Broadcasting.
The first phase focuses on six schools to prevent child abduction and provide a secure learning environment.
Security patrols currently operate at night, and the new CCTV system will help in monitoring public areas and deterring criminal activities.
Cameras will also be installed in areas prone to illegal rubbish dumping.
Funaki expressed hope that the surveillance system will also help reduce issues related to illicit drug distribution.
He urged community cooperation, especially from those near the cameras, to ensure the systems remain undamaged.
