A Tongan grandfather has been identified as the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred yesterday morning in the East Auckland suburb of Pakuranga. The victim, confirmed as Saia Kokohu Vi, was allegedly shot dead inside a vehicle on Marvon Downs Ave.
Police were alerted to the incident after multiple gunshots were reported around 6:45 am. Officers arrived at the intersection of Marvon Downs Ave and Pixie Pl to find an injured individual inside a vehicle. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Detective Inspector Kerry Watson described the situation as a “critical incident,” emphasizing that the police are deploying substantial resources to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting. “It’s going to take us some time to piece together what happened,” Watson stated, underscoring the complexity of the ongoing investigation.
Residents reported seeing at least 14 police cars and a number of armed officers at the scene. Ambulances and the police Eagle helicopter also attended the incident. Armed police have cordoned off the area, with significant police presence noted throughout the neighborhood.
Elm Park School, located nearby, issued a statement reassuring parents and staff about safety. Principal Sarah Baleicakau confirmed that there was no immediate danger to the school and that police assured her of the safety of students. “I have spoken to the police this morning and have been fully assured the school can remain open,” Baleicakau added.
As the investigation continues, police are focusing on ensuring the safety of the community and gathering information to determine who is responsible for this tragic event.
