The Fire and Emergency Services has received two fire trucks from Australia, a donation aimed at boosting emergency response capabilities as the country enters cyclone season.
Fire Commissioner Viliami Tuihalamaka said the trucks, provided by the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (SAMFS), arrived at an important time.
“These fire trucks come at the perfect time, especially as we are in the cyclone season,” Tu’ihalamaka told Tonga Broadcasting.

Australian High Commissioner to Tonga, Brek Batley, visited the Tonga Fire Services to inspect the vehicles and formally hand them over.
One truck will be stationed at the Nukuʻalofa Fire Service branch, while the other will be deployed to the Nukunuku Fire Department. The donation also included firefighting uniforms and equipment.

The total value of the trucks and gear is estimated at over 100,000 paʻanga. While most of the equipment is second-hand, officials say it remains in good working condition.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the SAMFS for their unwavering support and to the Australian Government for their continued partnership in strengthening emergency response services in Tonga,” the fire department said in a statement.
