The Trump administration has introduced ‘CBP Home,’ a revamped mobile application designed to facilitate voluntary departures of undocumented immigrants from the United States. This initiative aims to streamline the self-deportation process and is part of broader efforts to overhaul the U.S. immigration system.
Originally launched in October 2020 as ‘CBP One,’ the app was intended to assist commercial trucking companies in scheduling cargo inspections. In January 2023, its functionality expanded to allow migrants to schedule asylum appointments at U.S. ports of entry. However, the Trump administration discontinued this feature upon taking office on January 20, 2025, citing concerns over illegal immigration.
The rebranded ‘CBP Home’ app now enables undocumented individuals residing in the U.S. to voluntarily declare their intent to depart the country. By submitting an “Intent to Depart,” users can potentially avoid more severe immigration penalties. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that this option allows individuals to “still have the opportunity to return legally in the future and live the American dream.” She added, “If they don’t, we will find them, we will deport them, and they will never return.”
The app prompts users to confirm if they possess sufficient funds to leave the U.S. and if they hold a valid, unexpired passport from their country of citizenship. This measure is intended to ensure that individuals can complete their departure without logistical issues.
The introduction of ‘CBP Home’ aligns with the administration’s $200 million campaign urging undocumented immigrants to “stay out and leave now.” This strategy complements increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations and the suspension of certain parole programs.
Critics express concerns regarding the app’s efficacy and the potential misuse of collected biometric data. Privacy advocates warn that the app could infringe on individual rights and may not effectively address the complexities of the immigration system.
As the administration continues to implement stricter immigration policies, the impact of ‘CBP Home’ on undocumented communities remains to be seen. The effectiveness of this digital approach to self-deportation will likely be a subject of ongoing debate.
