President-elect Donald Trump has again suggested that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state, hours after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.
“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Monday. “The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned.”
Trump also claimed a merger would eliminate tariffs, lower taxes, and enhance security against Russian and Chinese threats. “Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!” he added.
Sources revealed Trump discussed the idea with Trudeau in November at Mar-a-Lago amid tariff threats. Trump is reportedly considering a 25% tariff on Canadian goods over issues like illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Trudeau announced his resignation earlier Monday, citing internal party struggles and public discontent over economic challenges during his nearly decade-long leadership.
