Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell is expected to arrive in Tonga on August 28 as the first stop in his Pacific tour, which includes visits to Vanuatu and New Zealand. Campbell’s visit to Tonga will mark his participation in the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, hosted by Tonga and chaired by Prime Minister Hu’akavemeiliku.
In Nuku’alofa, Campbell will lead the U.S. delegation, engaging with Pacific Island leaders to advance the U.S. Pacific Partnership Strategy. This visit highlights the United States’ commitment to deepening its engagement with Pacific Island nations, particularly in light of the growing geopolitical importance of the region.
The Forum offers a platform for Campbell to discuss key issues with Pacific leaders, emphasising U.S. support for regional stability, climate change initiatives, and sustainable development. His participation in the Forum is a continuation of the momentum built during the September 2023 U.S.-Pacific Islands Forum Summit in Washington, D.C., and the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture held in Hawai‘i in June 2024.
Campbell’s visit to Tonga is part of a broader effort by the United States to strengthen ties with Pacific Island nations, promoting collaboration and addressing shared challenges. After his visit to Tonga, Campbell will continue his Pacific tour in Vanuatu and New Zealand, to boost U.S. relations in the region.
