The University of Fiji and the ‘Atenisi Institute of Tonga have formed a new alliance to advance a holistic educational model for the Western Pacific.
This partnership aims to promote interdisciplinary learning that honors cultural knowledge and fosters broad-based intellectual development across the region.
According to Fiji Village news, University of Fiji’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Shaista Shameem, emphasized that the collaboration is built on shared educational values with ‘Atenisi.
“Atenisi Institute’s approach, rooted in culture, humanity, and rigorous interdisciplinary study, aligns closely with our vision,” Professor Shameem said.
She highlighted Atenisi’s distinct focus, founded in the 1970s by Dr. Futa Helu, which emphasizes education not just as a pathway to employment but as a means of cultural and intellectual enrichment.
Speaking at ‘Atenisi’s recent graduation ceremony, Professor Shameem urged students to broaden their understanding of “employment” beyond formal job markets.
She advocated for recognizing contributions made by those in informal sectors, including subsistence farming and domestic roles, as equally vital to national prosperity.
“A nation needs more than just job-specific skills,” Professor Shameem said. “Graduates should not only follow instructions mechanically but think critically, innovate, and show initiative.”
The University of Fiji and ‘Atenisi Institute plan to develop a collaborative program over the coming months, furthering their shared philosophy of education that celebrates humanity’s diverse and varied contributions to society.
This alliance marks a significant step forward in redefining higher education for the Pacific region.
