The United States has reinstated $9 million in funding for the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF), ensuring continued support for climate initiatives in the Pacific Islands.
This decision comes despite broader U.S. foreign aid reductions that have impacted several regional programs.
Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Secretary General Baron Waqa expressed gratitude for the renewed funding. “We’re very grateful to the U.S. government for lifting the suspension and we look forward, and keep working on, getting this ready for our leaders’ endorsement at the end of the year,” Mr. Waqa said.
The PRF, a Pacific-owned and led initiative, aims to enhance community resilience against climate change and natural disasters.
However, the U.S. aid cuts have affected several agencies of the Council of Regional Organisations, prompting Pacific leaders to seek new partnerships to fill funding gaps.
The reinstatement of PRF funding highlights the facility’s importance in regional climate resilience efforts. As the Pacific faces increasing climate threats, securing sustainable funding for initiatives like the PRF remains a priority.
