A motion of no confidence bearing the signatures of 29 Members of Parliament was lodged and received by the office of the Vanuatu Speaker of Parliament Thursday.
The motion was filed by the opposition Vanua’aku Pati, led by former Prime Minister Bob Loughman. It accuses the government of Prime Minister Alatoi Kalsakau of mismanaging the economy, corruption, and failing to deliver on its promises.
The motion is scheduled to be debated in Parliament on August 10. If the motion is passed, Kalsakau and his government will be forced to resign.
Kalsakau has dismissed the motion as a “political stunt” and has vowed to fight it. He said that his government has made significant progress in improving the economy and delivering on its promises.
The no-confidence motion comes at a time of political instability in Vanuatu. In recent months, there have been a number of protests against the government. The opposition has also accused the government of being too close to China.
The outcome of the no-confidence vote is uncertain. Kalsakau has the support of a majority of MPs, but the opposition is hoping to win over some of his supporters. The vote is likely to be close, and it could have a significant impact on the future of Vanuatu.
In addition to the no-confidence motion, Kalsakau is also facing a number of other challenges. The economy is struggling, and there is a high level of unemployment. The government has also been criticized for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It remains to be seen whether Kalsakau will be able to survive the no-confidence vote and remain in power. However, the vote is a sign of the growing discontent with his government. If Kalsakau is defeated, it could lead to a period of political instability in Vanuatu.
