A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck north of Neiafu, Vava’u, around 4:00pm today, with no tsunami threat reported.
The Tonga Meteorological Service confirmed the quake occurred 167 kilometres north of Neiafu at a depth of 142 kilometres. While the tremor was felt in Vava’u, it did not pose a tsunami risk to the region.
The Tonga National Tsunami Warning Centre stated that, based on preliminary data, no destructive waves were expected. Residents were advised that this would be the final update unless significant changes occurred.
Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity, but no further action is required at this time.
The Tonga region is part of the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Australian Plate, leading to frequent earthquakes. In recent years, Tonga has experienced several significant quakes, including a magnitude 6.8 event in October 2024, which also did not result in a tsunami.
Residents are reminded to rely on official sources, such as the Tonga Meteorological Service, for accurate and timely information regarding seismic events.
