The 7th PINA Media Summit in Niue has put a spotlight on creating safe spaces for women in media across the Pacific. PINA Manager and Editor Makereta Komai highlighted that discussions on the challenges faced by women in media began at the 6th PINA Summit in Honiara in 2022.
“Through conversations with women across the Pacific, PINA elevated the issue of Women in Media (WIM) to a regional agenda,” Komai explained. “Previously, it wasn’t seen as a significant issue for Pacific media.”
The establishment of WIM Fiji, co-founded by Rosi Doviverata, has allowed female journalists in Fiji to openly discuss their challenges. This initiative has gained attention from media workers in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands.
At the summit, WIM Fiji will share their experiences, advocating for a stronger voice for women in the industry. The goal is to create supportive networks across the Pacific.
