Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to Tonga during a diplomatic visit focused on climate resilience and regional security.
During her visit to Nuku’alofa yesterday Minister Wong met with Tongan Prime Minister Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Eke and Foreign Minister Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala to discuss shared priorities, including climate change, health, and security.
Australia announced a $50 million commitment over four years to support Tonga’s health sector and governance reforms. An additional $5 million will aid in strengthening health infrastructure and balancing the national budget. And another $1 million in community grants will empower local leaders to implement locally-led solutions.
Minister Wong emphasized Australia’s role as a reliable partner in the Pacific, highlighting the importance of regional security being managed within the Pacific family.
On climate change, Minister Wong acknowledged Australia’s responsibility and the need for global cooperation, noting that the Australian government was elected with a clear mandate to act on climate change.
The visit also included discussions on infrastructure projects, such as the $138.3 million upgrade to the Queen Salote International Wharf, aimed at strengthening climate resilience and economic growth.
