The Tonga Red Cross Society (TRCS) celebrated World Red Cross Day yesterday at its Nuku’alofa headquarters, with His Serene Highness Prince Tungi Tuku’aho as guest of honour.
The event, themed “On the Side of Humanity,” recognised the contributions of TRCS volunteers and staff in disaster response, health initiatives, and youth empowerment since the organisation’s founding in 1961.
Diplomatic representatives from Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom attended, reaffirming their commitment to humanitarian efforts.
British High Commissioner Philip Malone praised the Red Cross’s unwavering mission, stating, “Their commitments and bravery are inspiring—whether responding to natural disasters, providing medical care in conflict zones, or supporting communities in health crises, the Red Cross is always there ready to lend a helping hand.”
Students from local schools, including ‘Ahopanilolo Technical Institute and Acts Community School, participated in the celebration, highlighting the importance of youth engagement in humanitarian work.
Attendees were encouraged to wear red ribbons as a symbol of hope and unity, honouring the legacy of Red Cross founder Henry Dunant.
World Red Cross Day is observed annually on 8 May, commemorating Dunant’s birth and the global humanitarian movement he inspired.
