President Xi Jinping held a phone call on Friday with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, congratulating him on his re-election and stressing the importance of strengthening bilateral relations.
The two leaders discussed key international issues, including the Ukraine crisis and the Palestine-Israel conflict.
“The two heads of state agreed to establish strategic communication channels and maintain regular contacts on major issues of common concern,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
Xi emphasized that China and the U.S. must respect each other’s core interests and work toward mutual benefit and prosperity.
Xi also highlighted the need for the U.S. to handle the Taiwan issue with care, asserting its importance to China’s sovereignty.
He stressed that the essence of China-U.S. trade ties lies in “mutual benefit and win-win cooperation” rather than confrontation.
Trump echoed Xi’s sentiment, expressing his desire for ongoing dialogue and cooperation to safeguard global peace.
He also acknowledged the importance of the U.S. and China working together to address global challenges.
In a move to solidify ties, China’s Vice-President Han Zheng will attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday, signaling Beijing’s commitment to constructive engagement with the new U.S. administration.
